Positron emission tomography, known as “PET scan” in English, is a technique for seeing inside of a patient. A patient is injected with a radioactive isotope, which decays by emission of a positron. The positron then collides with an electron, after which they annihilate, and produce two gamma photons. These are detected by a machine to make an image.
