It arose after the breaking of the First Turkic Khaganate. In 712, the [[viteros_tiurciskos_kahanatos|Second Turkic Khaganate]] conquered the Western Turks and absorbed its tribes.

The Turgesh people were part of the Western Turkic Khaganate, but won independence in 699 CE, establishing the [[tiurgesjiskos_kahanatos|Turgesh Khaganate]].
